Writing a Press release (Exxon Valdez)

Procedure

Warm up:(25mn)

  • Teacher  exposes a video on the board about the Exxon Valdez disaster  and asks learners to watch it and take notes.

Aim: To attract learners attention to the subject of the task.

 Then teacher asks learners the following questions:

1-When did the catastrophe of Exxon Valdez happen ?

a-In 1989

b-In 1986

c-In 1968

2-Where did it occur ?

a-In the gulf of Finland

b-In the gulf of Alaska, America

c-In the gulf of Mexico

3-The main reason that led to the catastrophe was that the captain Joe Hazelwood:

a-Fellowed the shipping lanes paying attention to the submerged icebergs

b- Steered out of shipping lanes to avoid submerged icebergs.

4-The result was then :

a-Few beaches became dirty as the quantity of oil spilled in sound was not important.

b-Miles of beaches were soiled as million gallons were spilled in sound

5-20 years later we still smell oil in air ?

a-Yes              

b-No   

6-Exxon Valdez owner was fined 900 million for damages?

a-Yes              

b-No

Aim: Interacting with learners and interpreting the subject.

  • Task:(30mn)Teacher  explains what a press release means and the situation ,then asks learners to organize the notes and use the future passive to build a press release.

*Learners  are encouraged to supply sentences of their own.

*Some learners read their productions and a collective correction is undertaken.



    Right after the Exxon Valdez catastrophe, the owner of the shipping company made a press release to apologize for the damage and to promise reparation.

Re-write the press release using the secretary’s notes below and the future passive. You can add sentences of your own.

  • 2000 workers / recruit /soon

  • Oil / recuperate with special machines

  • Beaches / clean

  • Birds / wash out

  • Marine life / restore

  • Tourist industry / compensate / for its losses

  • Hotel workers / employ/by the company…

*Work individualy and remember that you can add  ideas/sentences of your own.

Press Release


   We make our sincere apologies for the damage caused by the wreck of

Exxon Valdez yesterday. We promise that oil will be recuperated with special machines and the spoilt beaches will be cleaned. Moreover, birds will be washed out. Therefore, Marine life will  be restored. We promise also that 2000 workers will be recruited soon as well as the Hotel workers who will be employed by the company. Besides, the tourist industry will be compensated for its losses. In addition, advertisement campaigns about the affected touristic sites will be launched so as to attract the holidays makers.
