Conditional Type One

Conditional Type One

  • Objective: To Remind students of the form of the conditional type one

  • Write this conversation on the board

A: Hurry up we might miss the train

B: “if we miss the train, we will take a taxi”

A:  but there is another possibility that “if we miss the train, we will take the next one”

  • What are they talking about?

  • About what will possibly happen if they miss the train.

  • Pick out the sentence with if then ask  some  questions

  • How many clauses are there in the sentence?

  • What tense is used in each of the clauses?

  • Remind students that we can reverse the placement of both clauses

Consider these pair of clauses

If Algeria plays against Egypt, It will win/It will lose/ the match will end in draw/ they may cancel the match because of a riot or bad weather……….

  • What will happen If Algeria plays against Egypt? A lot of things may or may not happen. We have so many possibilities

  • Both clauses refer to the future

  • We use if type one for actions that may or may not happen and we can replace will by may or can

  • If + Subject+ verb (in the present simple)+ compliment, subject+ will/can/may +stem+compliment

Activity one

Activity two

  • Remind students of the previous conversation and ask them about the function of the if clauses.

  • Tell them that there are some other functions and give explanation about them if needed.

  • Activity three

Match the sentences with their functions.

Offer- threat- advice- promise – prediction- warning

  1. A criminal met a lady in the street and said “if you don’t give me money, I’ll kill you”

  2. “If the clouds fill the sky, it will rain”

  3. Be careful! “if you touch that wire, you will get an electricity shock”

  4. “If you talk your parents nicely, Allah will reward you”

  5. The father said to his son “ If you get a high average this term, I will buy an IPad for you”

  6. I am good at math  “I will help you doing the math exercise if you want”

Production: ask students to write conditional sentences expressing the same functions in the exercise above.
